COVID-19 and research outputs and Open Access (OA)

The library research services team along with all our library colleagues are slowly adjusting to working remotely, during these unprecedented times. A significant amount of our activity and workload is around the open research agenda, and in particular open access (OA) to research publications and data.

We are aware that during the last few weeks there are many COVID-19 and Coronavirus research-related outputs being made freely available to access (not necessarily to text or data mine)  and our academic medical librarian Keith has made a very useful curated list of resources available here and the University Library has a list of  publishers and content providers who have provided temporary free access to a wide range of their material in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. .

A few resources and initiatives worth having a look at and searching (in addition to the key databases your normally use if your institution has a subscription) and if you are looking for COVID-19-related research or other research outputs, from both publishers and other sector-wide organisations.

Publisher hubs and resources

The International Association of Scientific Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) have provided a really useful listing of links to more than 30 publisher’s resource hubs and 'free to access' articles. The list was last updated on 15 April 2020 and the list includes all the major publishers such as CABI, CUP, BMJ, Elsevier, Emerald, OUP, NeJM, Springer Nature, Wiley, and many more.

Also worth noting the importance of preprints as a way of rapidly sharing research and this Lancet article discusses the growing importance and powerful role that preprint platforms have in a global health crisis.

Research data platforms
Last week the European Commission launched the European COVID-19 platform and you can discover COVID-19 research data on the Figshare COVID-19 open data platform

Other resources of interest to explore

Important caveat: not all of this content will remain OA forever, many of the resources have only been made available for a limited period of time, worth noting when 'free access' will be revoked and/or removed!
