PGR and staff training: Autumn sessions and dates announced

The 2018/19 academic year begins in the next few week. With it comes new PGR and staff training run by the Library Research Services team. We run workshops on a range of topics about finding, managing and using information in research.  Some of our core sessions and dates for the Autumn term have been announced. Further sessions, including those on research data , will be announced later in the term. New term, new workshops

 As the summer term starts, so does the Library's training workshops for researchers. Our program covers a range of sessions all related to finding, managing and using information.  These include: Planning and conducting a literature search Introduction to EndNote and RefWorks Looking after your stuff: research data management and data management plans Search strategies for systematic reviews Visualising research data Copyright and your thesis Communicating research with comics. You can find further information about all these session (and more) on PROSE . If you can't make a workshop, you are welcome to see Selina or myself individually. IT Software & Training for Researchers

Our colleagues in IT Services offer software and training that may be of interested to researchers: Work off-campus - instructions on accessing email, files and installing Office on your own machine. Programs for home use - information on software you can install at home for free or at a discount, such as NVivo, SAS and SPSS Research computing facilities - for those that might need high performance computing, wikis or filedrop services Help & training - they run training courses on a variety of Office programs. We would highly recommend the Word - Long Document Essentials training to anyone writing a thesis. If you will need to use software packages to analysis statistics or data then we suggest you look at the Research Methods & Methodologies training available from our colleagues in Researcher Development. And don't forget that the library also runs lots of training for researchers too!

Easter Postcard from the New York Public Library Collections The Library Research Services Team hope you have a good Easter break. Try to find some time to have some fun alongside doing your research! Our team will be out of the office Friday 25th March - Wednesday 30th March . We'll be back in again on Thursday 31st March. If you are planning on using the library over Easter then please check our Opening Hours . Remember that after Easter from April 11th there will be a New Look Library Search . We've also put up all our Summer Term workshops for research students.

Summer Term Workshops

Next term's training workshops is now listed on PROSE and on our page s. Our sessions on EndNote, RefWorks, literature searching and systematic reviews are being repeated. So too are the sessions that cover publishing, data management and analysis, Omeka and database design. New this term: A course on using XML  that will be of interest to anyone working in the digital humanities. An online version of Enhancing Your Digital Profile for distance learners and those who can't make it in person. Chantal Bielmann will be running a four week course on ArchGIS , the software for creating maps and using geographic data.  The workshops are open to all PhD students and are free to sign up to. New year, new term, new skills

As a new year begins, it may be time to learn new skills. Is there something you want to improve in 2016, or training that you missed last term? We can help. The Library's workshops for researchers include sessions on literature searching, Endnote & RefWorks, Open Access publishing, managing and using data. Raising your publication profile through Open Access

A series of short videos are now available to replicate our session on 'Raising your publication profile through Open Access' Research funders and the University expect researchers to make their research publications openly available. If you'd like to explore the options available to you we have a handy flowchart to help.
