We have had quite a few a queries from University of Leicester authors during the past few months around 'read and publish deals', transformative publishing deals, new author dashboards from publishers with which we have signed a 'Transformative agreement' (TA), and what this all means for individual authors and their publishing choice.

Jisc Collections: working with publishers to support OA

Jisc Collections is supporting Higher Education (HE) with the transition to open access (OA) through the negotiation of transitional (transformative) OA agreements which allow 100% of UK output to be published OA in accordance with UK funder policies.

What is a 'transformative journal'?

PlanS implementation comes into effect in January 2021 and they have produced a really useful collection of FAQs on this and they define a transformative journal as:

"A subscription/hybrid journal that is actively committed to transitioning to a fully Open Access journal."

The University of Leicester and OA deals and agreements

The University Library has had in place several discounted schemes , information is available on those schemes from the University Library website. We shall shortly be creating new guidance on all the schemes and transformative agreements in our new Sharepoint OA pages. Remember to email the open access helpdesk with any queries you may have about these deals and agreements.

Wiley and SAGE OA transformative agreements and the University of Leicester

The two agreements we are frequently asked about are those from SAGE and Wiley.
The SAGE open access portal is the dashboard that UoL authors can use to choose to make their SAGE articles open access and pick a funder-compliant OA license. This deal only covers hybrid journals and item types eligible include journal articles and conference proceedings.

The Wiley agreement covers all Wiley Journals, both hybrid and OA. Eligible item types include journal articles and conference proceedings. Wiley have produced two short videos on the importance and value on choosing the correct license type for OA articles.

  • A video on selecting a license for your OA output (generic and non-Wiley process)
  • A video for the Wiley process for your OA output
Remember, if you are funded by either UKRI or COAF (Wellcome) you are eligible to receive funding to pay for the cost of your article processing charge (APC) from our OA block grants. Please do fill in our form prior to submitting your paper.
